"Value of joining the European Federation Biotechnology"
EUROPEAN FEDERATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
Subject: Value of joining the European Federation of Biotechnology
Dear Colleague,
Innovation in science and technology is the foundation for Europe's vision of a knowledge based economy. Society expects a cleaner, greener industry, a better choice of products and more productive agriculture. Much is therefore expected of biotechnology in health care, industrial microbiology and new plant varieties for the food, feed and chemical sectors.
Established in 1978, the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB), through its membership, task groups, specialised sections and regional branch offices, brings together scientists to support this endeavour. Europe can and must be competitive and proactive, and EFB plays a key role in providing a voice for science and scientists in this dialogue.
EFB does much to support European industries and public research institutions in voicing the need for more transparent regulations, in encouraging the investment community to back an SME culture and to explore new models for bridging the communication gaps that exist between the public and private sector.
Much more needs to be done in organising the massive effort required to promote the value of scientific innovation. We believe that the best response we can give to the present economic downturn is to pool our strengths and collectively work towards a shared vision for the future.
To do so, we kindly invite you, individual scientists active at Universities, Public Sector Research Institutes or Private Sector, to support our efforts by becoming a Personal Member of EFB. This Personal Membership of EFB is free of charge. You just have to register via our website: http://www.efb-central.org
Membership provides opportunities to contribute to the development of biotechnology in Europe, and both formal and informal interaction with the many young biotechnologists who take part in our activities. We hope to be able to welcome you at our 14th biannual congress of Biotechnology ECB 14, Barcelona September 13 â 16, for the programme see also our website.
We look forward to your participation in EFB, a proactive and dynamic organisation that is sensitive to the challenges of tomorrow.
Â
On behalf of the Executive Board of EFB
Em. Prof. Marc Van Montagu
President of the European Federation Biotechnology
